BRITISH CULTURE


Hello students, today we are going to discover some interesting facts about the British culture. LET’S START.

First of all, you have to know the difference between Great Britain, and the United Kingdom. Great Britain is formed by England, Scotland and Wales. The UK (United Kingdom) is formed by England, Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland (NI). Moreover, there is no difference between the names Great Britain and Britain.

The British flag (UK) is called The Union Jack, and is made up from three other flags:

  1. Cross of St. George (England)

  2. Cross of St. Andrew (Scotland)

  3. Cross of St. Patrick (Ireland)

Major cities in the United Kingdom

  1. London has 7,6 million people

  2. Birmingham has 1 million people

  3. Glasgow (Scotland) has 640.000 people

  4. Edinburgh (Scotland) has 450.000 people

  5. Liverpool and Manchester have 400.000 people each

  6. Belfast (Northern Ireland) has 280.000 people

  7. Cardiff (Wales) has 270.000 people


Now, let’s talk briefly about the British history. Some important inventions and patents were:

1821: Michael Faraday invented the electric motor

1829: England formed the first Police Force

1916: Tank invention

1925: Scotsman John Baird invented the television

1989: Tim Berners-Lee developed the “World Wide Web”


Some important celebrities in the British culture are:

  • William Shakespeare

  • Sir Isaac Newton

  • James Darwin

  • Charles Dickens

  • Winston Churchill

  • Queen Elizabeth II

  • Margaret Thatcher

  • Stephen Hawking

  • Diana Princess of Wales

  • J. K. Rowling


The British culture is full of important traditions such as:

  • St Valentine's Day

  • April Fools Day

  • Shrove Tuesday

  • Easter

  • May Day

  • Guy Fawkes Night

  • Christmas

  • Trooping the Colour- official birthday of the Queen.


Regarding the traditional food, British people have three main meals a day: breakfast (between 7:00-9:00), lunch (between 12:00 and 1:30 pm) and dinner, sometimes called supper. The last one is the main meal. Eaten between 17:30 and 20:00.
