Also called Resurrection Sunday, Easter Sunday is a Christian tradition which celebrates the resurrection of Christ. Although Easter Sunday is not formally defined as a bank holiday in the UK, it is considered a day off for many people because it falls on Sunday. In the UK, the term bank holiday is commonly used to make reference to all public holidays. The Friday before Easter Sunday and the Monday after are a bank holiday in the UK.
During this day, people give each other different food, such as chocolate Easter eggs, Easter bunnies or eggs filled with different candies. In the UK, it is common to invite family and friends for Easter Sunday lunch, and the traditional Easter Sunday meal is a lamb roast. Common decorations such as painted eggs, little yellow chicks, bunnies, spring flowers (daffodils, white lilies, and tulips) are used to decorate houses during the Easter holiday. English people used this type of flowers because the colors yellow and gold are usually associated with this tradition.
Young people play egg hunts, a traditional game played during Easter where they try to find hidden Easter eggs. According to different popular legends, the Easter bunny hides the eggs. In addition, people usually organize egg rolls, a game where they roll hard-boiled eggs down slopes.In another variation of the game, people knock hard-boiled eggs against other peoples' eggs. The winner is the person whose egg remains whole. After the game, the eggs are eaten. In some parts of Scotland, fondant-filled chocolate eggs about the size of a hen's egg are covered in batter and deep-fried.
During the Easter holiday, schools in UK close for two weeks, just enough time to digest all the food, especially the chocolate.
